Housing Forum Actions

At the forum families and carers expressed a strong desire for further follow up and action on Housing. Based on your suggestions, ARAFEMI is hosting the following start up activities to offer more specific opportunities to meet other carers and get advice / support:

New! Download our housing tips for carers help sheet

A tip sheet on housing is now available for carers of people with a mental illness.

1. Connect on-line via our carer message board

If you would like to meet and talk to other carers / form a network please go to our message board at ../family-support/online-support.html When you register and log in for the first time, you will see that we have set up a new topic HOUSING. You can join this conversation or start a new thread with a specific topic. This initiative aims to link carers and families with each other who are potentially able to join together or share their learnings.

For example: you are looking to meet another carer interested in purchasing a property in Ringwood or you are looking for a carer with experience in setting up a trust and want some advice on what it was like.

2. Join a need specific action group

ARAFEMI will be hosting specific follow up action groups for carers who wished to connect over joint issues. These groups, will be hosted and supported by ARAFEMI and are intended to be organic. That is the work group can have the opportunity to meet and then advise ARAFEMI of what links and support they need to progress plans. ARAFEMI will then make contact with suitable organizations / professionals and invite to further meetings.

3. Attend a specific future planning workshop / Education

Planning for the future when caring for someone with mental health issues has individual challenges, as compared to caring for someone with a physical illness. This seminar will explore legal issues, wills, and various options to ensure your family member will be supported in the future. Ring our Carer Helpline 1300 550 265 to locate a planning workshop near you.

4. Keep Updated

Keep up to date with Housing news and events across Victoria. We will regularly update this page to let you know of any other events or activities that may be of relevance to families and carers planning for the future.

5. Evaluation

We are keen to receive feedback from attendees to the Housing Forum so that we can continuously improve our offering to carers and consumers alike.
